CBS Evening News to Move Back to New York in Format Overhaul

CBS News is moving quickly with its plans for CBS Evening News once Norah O’Donnell departs the evening newscast. The news outlet announced that the broadcast after the election will move back to New York after a five-year stint in Washington, D.C. and will be anchored by John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois. Other changes coming to the broadcast include Margaret Brennan joining to lead coverage from Washington, D.C. CBS News’ chief foreign affairs correspondent and moderator of Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan will lead coverage when news breaks on the political and foreign affairs fronts. Also, WCBS meteorologist Lonnie Quinn is joining CBS Evening News as chief weathercaster with nightly weather segments. Images courtesy of CBS News[/caption] In announcing these on-air changes, Wendy McMahon, president and CEO of CBS News and Stations and CBS Media Ventures said, “The strength of CBS News has always been in its ensemble of journalists, both in front of and behind the camera, and our goal with John, Maurice, Margaret and Lonnie at the Evening News is to elevate the best in their fields every night for our viewers.” McMahon also added that 60 Minutes correspondents will contribute to CBS Evening News “when they have news to break; for decades this was routine, so it will be again.” There will also be changes taking place off-camera to the evening news broadcast as it will be infused with talent from the 60 Minutes family, including executive producer Bill Owens. He will become the supervising producer of CBS Evening News when it moves to New York and will continue to oversee the Sunday news magazine. Also joining CBS Evening News from 60 Minutes is Guy Campanile, who becomes executive producer of the nightly program, and Jerry Cipriano, who becomes senior news editor and senior producer of the broadcast. “This broadcast won’t be the traditional headlines that move from one clipped story to the next, said Owens. “There will be a new format and cadence for how we deliver the news, and Guy and Jerry are the best partners to do this with.” Dickerson is currently the anchor of the streaming news show The Daily Report with John Dickerson on CBS News 24/7 and also serves as the CBS News chief political analyst, senior national correspondent and contributor to CBS Sunday Morning. DuBois currently co-anchors the evening news broadcasts of the local New York CBS affiliate WCBS at 5 and 11 p.m. ET. He has also served as a substitute anchor for CBS Evening News, CBS Mornings and reported for CBS Sunday Morning. These changes come on the Heels of O’Donnell announcing her departure from CBS Evening News once the 2024 election concludes. O’Donnell will remain with CBS News in an expanded role as a CBS News senior correspondent focusing on long-form reporting and interviews across CBS and Paramount, including primetime specials, CBS News Sunday Morning, 60 Minutes, Paramount+ and more. “Norah’s new role will give her the opportunity to contribute across CBS and Paramount, allowing us to see more of the groundbreaking stories and interviews that have been the hallmark of her career,” said McMahon. “Her superpower lies in her ability to secure and deliver big interviews and newsmaking stories that set the news cycle and capture the cultural zeitgeist.”
