MSNBC to Split From NBC News Following Comcast Cable Break-Up

The ratings-challenged cable outlet will no longer be part of NBC News

Comcast to MSNBC: It’s not us, it’s you. NBCUniversal News Group’s parent company unveiled an ambitious plan on Wednesday that would spin many of its struggling cable networks off into a separate company that’s currently being called, appropriately enough, SpinCo. CNBC, Syfy, E!, and the USA Network are among the channels joining MSNBC in this new venture.

“When you look at our assets, talented management team and balance sheet strength, we are able to set these businesses up for future growth,” Comcast chairman and CEO Brian Roberts said in a statement, adding: “SpinCo will be ideally positioned for success and highly attractive to investors, content creators, distributors and potential partners.”
